Texas running back CJ Baxter, a local standout and fan favorite, suffered a devastating knee injury during practice on Tuesday, cutting his promising season short and requiring surgery, the school announced on Wednesday.
An MRI revealed Baxter tore his lateral and posterior collateral ligaments (LCL and PCL), according to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Baxter, who was ranked 30th overall in the 2023 ESPN 300, was expected to be a game-changer for the Longhorns this season. As a local hero, his journey had inspired many, and his performance last year showcased his immense potential. He became the first true freshman to start a season opener for Texas since Ricky Williams in 1995, though his debut against Rice was cut short by a rib injury after five carries for 38 yards.
Baxter’s loss is a significant blow to the Longhorns, but the team boasts considerable depth at running back. Baxter and Jaydon Blue were expected to share carries, and both had been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list, which honors the nation’s best running back.
Texas is set to open its first season as a member of the SEC on August 31 at home against Colorado State. Baxter’s absence will be felt deeply, both on and off the field, as fans and teammates alike rally in support of his recovery.
