Former UCF coach and FSU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has announced his retirement at the age of 60. Malzahn spent last season with the Seminoles, following stints as head coach at UCF, Auburn, and Arkansas State.

During his time at Auburn, Malzahn led the team to a national championship in 2010 while serving as the offensive coordinator. After 35 years in the coaching world, Malzahn shared in a statement that it was time for him to step away and focus on the next chapter of his life.

In his place, Coach Mike Norvell has promoted co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to take over as the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator. Under Malzahn’s leadership in 2025, Florida State’s offense led the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense and rushing offense. The team also had an impressive nine 400-yard outputs, including two games with over 700 yards, a first in school history.

Norvell expressed his gratitude for Malzahn’s efforts and dedication to the program over the past 14 months, and credited him for setting a strong foundation for the team to continue building on in the upcoming 2026 season. As the Seminoles move forward, they will do so under the coordination of Tim Harris and a strong group of returning assistant coaches.

Malzahn’s retirement marks the end of an era for Florida State and the beginning of a new chapter for him personally. As the team prepares for the 2026 season, they will undoubtedly miss Malzahn’s leadership and expertise, but they are confident in the foundation he has helped establish for their continued success.
