With a dominant performance in the second half of their game, the UCF Knights prevailed over the SMU Mustangs. It was a poor start to the game for both teams, and neither team was able to get much offense going in the first half. It is fair to say that the offense was a little lackluster in the first half. UCF’s Jason Jonson recovered a fumble committed by SUM on the very first drive of the game. Despite the fact that the Knights were able to capitalize on the turnover by kicking a field goal, none of their subsequent drives were successful for them in the first quarter. The Mustangs then took the lead after completing an eight-play touchdown drive covering 75 yards that was capped off by a 39-yard touchdown run by Velton Gardner. In the second quarter, the Knights were able to score one touchdown due to Isaiah Bowser’s hard-hitting and noise-making rushing attack.
Colin Rogers, the Mustangs’ kicker, was responsible for both of the team’s field goals in the second quarter, which allowed them to take a slim 13-10 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Knights had a very different experience in the second half of the game. While the defense kept the Mustangs to only six points, the offense went on a scoring rampage, scoring 31 points. In the second half, the Knights began to assert their dominance on both sides of the ball, and they continued to do so all the way through the end of the game, which they won 41-19.
The defensive play of the Knights and their ability to put pressure on SMU’s offense were the defining aspects of this contest. UCF’s defense was responsible for three turnovers (one fumble recovery, one interception, and one safety) while also preventing the Mustangs from scoring in the third quarter and limiting the Mustangs’ scoring in the fourth quarter to just two field goals. It is important not to overlook the tenacious running game that the Knights have, which is led by running back Isaiah Bowser, who was responsible for three rushing touchdowns. The Knights gained a total of 160 yards on the ground and 324 yards through the air as a team. All this while not committing any turnovers at all.

As the Knights look to extend their current winning streak to a fourth game this season, their focus will now shift to their rivals in the conference, the Temple Owls. The Owls enter the game with a record of 2-3 themselves and are looking to turn around a disappointing season. Both squads are looking to improve their standing in the American standings, so this matchup will undoubtedly be a challenge for them.
Thank you for your support! Go Knights!
