The highly anticipated return of QB Plumlee was poised to be a glorious moment for the UCF Knights. However, this optimism quickly gave way to uncertainty as backup quarterback Timmy McClain had to step in to replace the team’s go-to QB. Plumlee’s time on the field was limited to just one play, as it became evident that he wasn’t feeling at his best, possibly due to an injury, and not want to risk compromising his gameplay, especially since he was sporting a brace for the game.
As the game progressed, the UCF Knights found themselves in a dire situation, having allowed an alarming 53 unanswered points since their last matchup against Baylor. This troubling trend has become a pressing concern that needs immediate attention from Gus, the offense, and the defense to rectify and prevent further setbacks.
The game’s development was already under question as the second half began, with the UCF Knights trailing significantly. They faced a daunting 24 unanswered points scored against them.
Amidst this challenging game, the offense could only find some slight solace in a few botched plays from Kansas and in the performance of running back RJ Harvey who by the end of the game had 1 TD and managed to amass a total of 133 yards. McClain the backup QB had 2 touchdowns one to WR Javon Baker and the other from Alec Holler much later in the game.
As for the Kansas side, quarterback Jason Bean displayed efficiency, completing 8 out of 12 passes for a total of 91 passing yards and a touchdown. Notably, preseason All-Big 12 selection Devin Neal made his presence felt on the field by rushing for an impressive 154 yards on just 12 attempts, while Daniel Hishaw recorded 19 carries for 134 yards.
Chance to Get Started
The second half got off to a rocky start for the Knights as they quickly conceded a touchdown within the opening 10 seconds of the third quarter, by Devin Neal. However, UCF managed to revive their offense early in the second half with a touchdown scored by TE Holler. This marked the end of the Knights’ 53+ point unanswered streak. They attempted a two-point conversion, but it was fiercely defended, and an interception was narrowly avoided.

In a wonderful turn of events, UCF secured a much-needed 3pts in a blocked FG and return by DB Demari Henderson making the score 8 – 37 in the 7-minute mark of the 3rd quarter. Another opportunity would arrive the 4th quarter; we would see the Knights on the board again with RJ Harvey with a touchdown at 13:47 in the 4 quarter. Late in the quarter, UCF keeps up the momentum with Randy Pittman on a 23rd pass by McClain.
A Promising Future Defense?
On the defensive front, linebacker Jason Johnson showcased his prowess with a total of eight tackles, including an impressive six solo stops. Meanwhile, defensive end Josh Celiscar matched his personal best, contributing seven tackles, including two crucial tackles for a loss. Safety Jireh Wilson also played a pivotal role with seven tackles of his own. Adding to the intrigue, freshman John Walker secured his maiden career start in the game, while linebacker Rian Davis marked his first start with UCF.
A Look Towards the Future at QB and the Knights
