In a significant development for the Orlando Magic, Coach Jamahl Mosley has inked a four-year contract extension, extending his tenure through the 2027-28 season. The announcement came on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment amid the franchise’s ongoing transformation.
“Jamahl and his team have demonstrated remarkable dedication and skill not only throughout this season but since his arrival in 2021,” remarked Magic President of Basketball Operations, Jeff Weltman, in a recent statement. “His unwavering commitment, work ethic, ability to connect with the players, and contagious passion have yielded positive outcomes both on and off the court. We are thrilled to have Jamahl continue leading the Magic into the future.”
At 45 years old, Mosley has spearheaded a resurgence for the Magic, propelling the young core of the team to an impressive 37-28 record and securing fifth place in the competitive Eastern Conference this season. Negotiations for the extension, facilitated by Mosley’s representative Bret Just of WME and Weltman, concluded on Monday night, sources disclosed.
Since Weltman brought Mosley on board three years ago, they have worked in tandem to orchestrate a roster overhaul centered around burgeoning talents like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, positioning the Magic on a trajectory towards the upper echelons of the conference.
Under Mosley’s guidance, the Magic have seen a steady uptick in victories each season, culminating in a 12-game improvement from 2023-2024 to the current season’s 37 wins. Impressively, the team ranks fifth in defensive efficiency this season, a feat not achieved since the 2009-2010 season, as per ESPN Stats and Information. Notably, the Magic have held opponents to under 100 points on 18 occasions this season, tying them for the most in the NBA.
Mosley joined the Magic in 2021 after stints with the Dallas Mavericks under Rick Carlisle, following nine seasons on coaching staffs with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets. Additionally, he served as the head coach of the Team USA select team during the summer of 2023, further enhancing his coaching pedigree.
