Additions to the Buccaneers’ defense continued Monday as six-year veteran cornerback Tavierre Thomas signed a 1-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after spending the last three seasons with the Houston Texans as well as a 3 year stint with Cleveland to begin his career.
Thomas primarily plays as a slot/nickel corner, excelling against the run and playing his best snaps in zone coverage schemes. Ironically enough, he snagged an interception from Baker Mayfield in 2023 during the Buccaneers’ Week 9 loss to the Texans. Thomas will likely compete with Christian Izien, who started in the slot all 17 games last year.

After going undrafted and spending a brief period on Arizona’s practice squad, Thomas signed with the Cleveland Browns, where he would remain for three years. After spending two years playing mostly special teams, he started 16 games his final year in Cleveland before moving on to Houston in 2021.
He would have his best professional campaign that year, recording two interceptions and 86 tackles along with a forced fumble. After the previous two seasons appearing lackluster on paper, the Buccaneers will add Thomas to a growing secondary that will look to improve on their 2023 pass defense, which ranked 29th in YPG allowed.
