This morning, former Buccaneers Safety Logan Ryan announced his retirement from professional football after eleven very successful years. Ryan only spent one season with Tampa Bay, in 2022, but his presence was instrumental in the growth of several young players on the defense that year.

Logan Ryan was drafted in the third round of the 2013 Draft by the New England Patriots. He was the ideal player under Bill Belichick, entering the League already possessing a high football IQ and knack for being able to play physical “old school” defense. He won two Super Bowls (XLIX and LI) with the New England Patriots before departing after the 2016 season to sign a contract with the Tennessee Titans.
In Tennessee, he continued being a productive defender, though not as notably as his years in New England were. He stepped up to leadership roles during a time when Tennessee was competitive, and oddly enough, intercepted Tom Brady’s final pass as a Patriot and returned it for a touchdown to oust New England from the 2019 Playoffs.
In the 2020 season, Ryan began his next two years with the New York Giants. This would be the first time Ryan played at Safety and he transitioned seamlessly. Fans adored Ryan in New York as he was known for his hard hitting, “fly to the ball” style of play. The 2020 and 2021 seasons would mark the last time Ryan played an entire NFL season as a starter.
In 2022, Ryan moved on to the Buccaneers to be reunited with Tom Brady. Though the Bucs were ousted in the Wild Card round of the Playoffs, Ryan contributed admirably. He helped to further develop Antoine Winfield Jr.’s game and mentor younger players which will always be one of the most respectable aspects of Ryan’s great career.
Last year, during the 2023 season, Ryan would spend the year with the San Francisco 49ers as a mostly rotational player. He would get to see the bright lights of the Super Bowl one last time, but the 49ers were defeated in Overtime, marking the final NFL game he would play. He was able to make six Championship Games and win two Super Bowls in his 11 years in the League. Bucs Nation wishes Ryan good health and fortune in all he will do in the next chapter of his life.
