UCF football is facing one of its toughest challenges yet – the loss of offensive line coach Shawn Clark. Clark, who joined Scott Frost’s coaching staff in January, passed away Sunday night after being hospitalized for a medical emergency. He was not just a coach, but a friend, father, and mentor to those who knew him.
Frost, fighting back tears, spoke about the impact Clark had on him and the team. “I just miss my friend,” he said. “He had an energy and a spirit about him that was contagious. He was one of my favorite people I’ve ever been around and coached with.”
Despite the difficult circumstances, UCF is preparing for their first road game of the season against Kansas State. Frost acknowledged the challenges of focusing on football while also dealing with grief and loss. “Football is what we do, but it’s not life,” he said. “It’s trivial compared to real things in life.”
Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch shared his own personal experience with loss, emphasizing that life goes on even in the midst of struggle. He also expressed his admiration for Clark’s compassion and love for his players.
Offensive coordinator Steve Cooper echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of relying on teammates and colleagues for support during difficult times.
UCF plans to honor Clark with a decal on their helmets for Saturday’s game against Kansas State. However, Frost acknowledged that it seems trivial in comparison to the loss they are experiencing.
As the team moves forward, they will carry the memory and legacy of Shawn Clark with them. His impact on the UCF football program will not be forgotten.
