Bethune-Cookman’s victory over Alabama State earned recognition on both sides of the ball when the SWAC announced its October 5 weekly football awards.
Running back Rashon Brown was selected as Offensive Player of the Week, while safety Naim Lassiter received Defensive Player of the Week honors. BCU Athletics reported that the awards were the first of each player’s career.
Brown’s performance supplied the foundation for the Wildcats’ 16–10 victory. The redshirt freshman carried 31 times for 260 yards and a touchdown, according to the university’s awards announcement. That release identified the total as the third-highest single-game rushing mark in program history.
His efficiency mattered as much as the workload. Brown averaged 8.4 yards per carry and individually exceeded Alabama State’s 255 yards of total offense. With the game staying close, his ability to gain ground repeatedly helped BCU maintain scoring opportunities.
Lassiter anchored the defensive side with nine tackles, including six solo stops, and half a sack. The redshirt junior helped hold the Hornets to 10 points, giving the Wildcats room to win a game in which touchdowns were difficult to produce.
The selections brought Bethune-Cookman’s total to three SWAC weekly awards for the season at that point.
The pairing captured the balance behind the result. Brown gave the offense a reliable source of yardage, while Lassiter and the defense kept Alabama State from turning a close contest into an offensive shootout. The conference recognition reflected both contributions.
