COLLEGE PARK — A sunny afternoon at Orlando Bishop Moore Catholic High School’s Memorial Stadium, provided a picture-perfect backdrop for the visiting Hawks of Port Orange Spruce Creek, as they secured a clean sweep in two halves of football during their spring game jamboree, on Thursday.
A BRIEF RECAP
After a relaxing, fifty-eight minute bus ride (quickest route) from Port Orange to Edgewater Drive in Orlando; the reigning District 7A-4 leaders never missed a beat. Hawks’ offensive execution was efficient, scoring fourteen points on both opposing defenses. Led by ten-year veteran Head Coach Andy Price, the Hawks leaned on a well-balanced approach, pairing a punishing ground game with a carefully executed, quick-pass attack, commanded by rising junior Quarterback Luke Smith.
Spruce Creek’s defensive squad showed promise as well, preventing a scoring drive by opposing offensives all day. Honorable mentions for seniors Brody Heffington, Jesse Smith and Connor Barie for big play contributions on both sides of the ball. Seniors aside, Spruce Creek’s depth was also on full display, with talented underclassmen like Tony Kinsler, Anthony Fawcett, Derry Norris, Demarko Evans, and Quamon Cunnison, all making their mark on scoring drives for the Hawks.
MOVING FORWARD TO FALL
In seeking to build on the successes of last year’s campaign, the Hawks clearly welcome adversity. This is made evident by a gauntlet of a schedule on their quest to the post-season. Most notably, fans should keep an eye on Week 5, which features one the Hawk’s most attention-grabbing match-ups, when Spruce Creek visits 3-time FHSAA state champion Coach Rick Darlington, and his resurgent Deland Bulldogs on Friday, September 30th.
Spruce Creek Football finished first place in District 7A-4 at 8-2, in 2021. This year, the Hawks travel to Seabreeze High School on August 25th, for the season opener.
