Another game, and another anxiety-inducing win for Coach Willie Simmons and the Rattlers.
FAMU gave themselves all the trouble they could handle while slithering away from Grambling State with Coach Willie Simmons’ 50th career win. After a first half performance that only earned them three points, the visiting team found themselves in a dangerous position, trailing Hugh Jackson’s Tigers.
Second half action featured a better start for the Rattlers. A 68-yard drive, ending with a touchdown strike to redshirt junior Jeremi Pruitte, finally gave FAMU some breathing room. Another score before the 4th quarter helped the Rattler’s efforts as well, but the generous donation of over 170 yards worth of committed penalties (14 infractions total) was a steep price for Simmons’ offense to pay.
Dark Clouds Roll In
Defense continues to be the Rattlers’ saving grace. Led by the trio of Isiah Major, Kortney Cox and Johnny Chaney; the Dark Clouds Defense forced two fourth down turnovers, and cutting down the home team’s time of possession to under 30 minutes. For their part, the three Rattler defensive leaders combined for 19 tackles between them.
Loose like Moose.
Grambling State keyed in on Xavier Smith all game, allowing for an stand-out performance by redshirt senior Jah’Marae Sheread. Despite a slow start, Rattler Nation finally got to see a never-before-seen offensive weapon. Late in the third, Quarterback Jeremy Moussa faked a hand-off and galloped into the endzone for his first rushing touchdown of the season.
The Rattlers have a bye week to fix their penalty issues, before hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff for FAMU Homecoming on October 29 at 4 p.m. Eastern.
