BCU suffers a road loss against Alcorn State after a costly pick-six lifts the Braves to 17 for the win. With the season’s end on the horizon, I really wanted to see the wildcats put together a win on this trip but the best team won on Saturday.
Things were looking good for the Wildcats who had just put together a winning drive before the interception. Jalon Jones’ 9-yard touchdown run and 10-yard reception from Kemari Averett in the second half spurred the Wildcats (5-5, 4-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) back to a 14-10 lead before Smith intercepted Jones and returned it for a pick-six with 4:39 left.
Low Scoring High Threats
The Braves accumulated 156 yards rushing in the game, while Bethune-Cookman was limited to just 37 yards on the ground.
Alcorn utilized a two-quarterback system with a “Wildcat” formation for much of the game, with Tre Lawrence and Tevarrius Adams alternating at quarterback. Jarveon Howard, a Walter Payton Award Watch List running back, sprinted 12 yards up the middle to give the Braves their first touchdown. The hosts then led 7-0 after Noah Kiani’s PAT.
On their next drive, the Braves advanced 45 yards in 13 plays, and Kiani scored on a 27-yard field goal to give Alcorn a 10-0 lead at halftime. However, Alcorn’s defense was stretched in the third quarter, allowing the Wildcats to get back into the game by using some efficient passing.
Quarterback Jones completed 22 of 34 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown in BCU’s loss. The Braves quarterback Lawrence was sacked and the ball was returned 32 yards by the Wildcats’ Eddie Walls III into Braves territory on the Alcorn eight-yard line. Three plays later, the Wildcats took advantage. With 7:37 left in the third quarter, Jones would call his number on the right side for the touchdown, cutting into the lead, 10-7.
B-CU didn’t do a great job utilizing the field for this game on the ground. The Braves out-rushed the Wildcats, 156 yards to 37, in the game. The next game for the Wildcats is against the FAMU Rattlers in the Florida Blue Florida Classic. FAMU has been on a mission this season beating everyone in their path except the SWAC’s unbeatable JSU Tigers. I suspect this game won’t be a pretty one for the Wildcats, but they have time to go out on top with a win at Camping World Stadium.
