In a recent interview, we had the privilege of sitting down with Coach Buck Gurley, the head coach of Ocoee High School. Coach Buck, whose real name is Cedric Gurley, has been a familiar face in the football community for over 15 years, known for his dedication to the sport and his ability to mentor young athletes. As he takes over the head coaching position at Corey High, he shares his insights on the values he instills in his players and his plans to enhance their football IQ.

Instilling Responsibility and Discipline

Coach Buck believes that being responsible and disciplined are crucial attributes for young men, both on and off the football field. Recognizing the challenges faced by today’s youth, he emphasizes the need for better guidance. Beyond teaching the game of football, his goal is to help his players develop into well-rounded individuals who understand the game of life. By instilling discipline and responsibility, Coach Buck aims to prepare his athletes for success, not only in football but also in their future endeavors.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Taking over a successful program can be a daunting task for any coach, but Coach Buck feels fortunate to inherit a team that has already shown great promise. Under the previous coach, Shepherd, Ocoee High achieved impressive results. Coach Buck’s plan is to build on this strong foundation rather than making drastic changes. He acknowledges the academic excellence of his players, with the lowest GPA on the team being a respectable 2.0 and the majority boasting a 3.0 or higher. Instead of focusing on academics, Coach Buck aims to fine-tune their football knowledge and ensure they are well-versed in the language of the game.

Enhancing Football IQ

Coach Buck and his coaching staff prioritize increasing the Football IQ (FBI) of their players. They recognize the importance of mental agility and strategic thinking on the field, often distinguishing great players from good ones. While athleticism may get players noticed, it is their football knowledge that can truly set them apart. By teaching their athletes to understand the game at a deeper level, Coach Buck hopes to equip them with the skills to excel both in the classroom and on the field. They aim to produce players who can not only execute physical plays but also analyze game situations and make informed decisions.

Conclusion

Coach Buck Gurley’s journey as the head coach of Corey High School is just beginning, but his passion for the sport and dedication to his players are evident. With a focus on responsibility, discipline, and enhancing football IQ, he aims to mold his athletes into well-rounded individuals who excel in all aspects of life. As Corey High embarks on a new season, Coach Buck’s leadership and commitment to developing both skilled players and strong characters are sure to make a lasting impact.
