STORM SURGEREACTION AND RECAP

STORM SURGE

Texas A&M Coach Jimbo Fisher’s very detailed scouting report on the new-look Miami Hurricanes wasn’t enough to save his No. 23 ranked Aggies on Saturday afternoon. In the signature moment of Mario Cristobal’s tenure in Coral Gables, thus far, the Hurricane overwhelmed visiting Texas A&M, 48-23.

Some of the highlights for the Canes included Miami Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke throwing a career-high five touchdown passes, wide receiver Jacolby George (Fort Lauderdale Plantation HS) snagging a career-best three touchdown receptions, and fellow wideout Brashard Smith (Miami Palmetto HS) electrifying Hard Rock Stadium with a 98-yard kickoff return for a score.

Remember when Brashard Smith took it 98 yards to the house?

REACTION AND RECAP

In their last meeting, the Hurricanes failed to find the endzone even once, falling to the Aggies in College Station.

This time around, Miami’s offense stacked 451 total yards and Van Dyke threw for 374 of them, completing 21 of 30 passes to six different teammates in a breakout game for Miami’s receivers. Xavier Restrepo (Broward Deerfield Beach HS) racked up a career-high 126 receiving yards, and Colbie Young hauled in six passes for 75 yards and a score. Jacolby George (Plantation HS) totaled 94 yards on five receptions.

For the first time in years, the Hurricanes offensive attack looked potent, and efficient.

On the defensive side of the ball, Miami forced three key turnovers, smothering the Aggies offense. All-America safety Kam Kinchens (Miami Northwestern HS), contributed two important takeaways, before a late game injury ended his night. Fellow safety James Williams (Plantation American Heritage HS) paced the Canes with nine tackles, and cornerback Te’Coury Couch (Chaminade-Madonna Prep HS) iced the game with a late interception.

Jimbo Fisher definitely did his homework on Miami. ????

Tyler Van Dyke became the first Miami quarterback to throw five touchdown passes against a Top 25 team.

“We are working our way there,” Cristobal shared during his postgame remarks. “We are nowhere where we want to be. We’ve got a couple of guys who are nicked up, banged up, and we’ll see what that looks like but all in all just a massive step for the program. The Aggies are a really good football team. They’ve recruited everyone in the country over the last few years so they are loaded to the gills, but we work hard, we practice hard, we train hard, we prepare hard. We felt that if we eliminated mistakes we’d be able to take over the football game and we did.”

Miami hosts Bethune-Cookman on Thursday night, at Hard Rock Stadium..
