THE FRONT RUNNERS

Hailing from West Palm Beach, Travis Hunter is the best player in college football.

Following the biggest win of the Coach Prime Era, Travis Hunter has elevated Colorado’s chances of conference title, and his chances at winning the Heisman Trophy, simultaneously. Which is fitting, considering Hunter is Colorado’s most effective weapon on offense, and defense, simultaneously. Arriving in Orlando during a short week, to face down a dangerous UCF Knights team as underdogs, Hunter’s aura was unmistakable as he willed his team above, and beyond one of the best young teams in the nation.

TRAVIS HUNTER

Literally the embodiment of his team’s defiance of the media narratives, and the odds. At the time, UCF was well-above CU in conference standings, and the majority of predictions. Now, the Buffs are second place in conference play behind BYU. Hunter’s day in Orlando consists of leading the Buffaloes in receiving with nine catches for 89 yards and a score. He also notched his second interception of the season as the Buffaloes improved to 4-1 overall and undefeated in conference.

It’s no confusion regarding Hunter’s frontrunner status. Over the course of his college career, and if this trajectory continues, similarities to Charles Woodson will only become more glaring, and harder to deny.

In Coral Gables, and in all the Great State of Florida, there is no more important college football player than Cam Ward.

It has been well-over a decade since the Hurricanes have been a dominate force in-state, or defeated both FSU and UF in the same season. More importantly, the Hurricanes are on pace to secure their first ACC championship in program history. More importantly than that, the Hurricanes are currently ranked in the AP Top 10, and remain undefeated after five games. All of this energy, courtesy of their senior quarterback. There is no other leader on the team that inspires as much energy, and swagger as the 22-year old veteran.

CAM WARD

In many ways that mirror CU’s own Heisman Trophy candidate, Ward’s intangible impact as an emotional leader on his team rivals his on field contributions. Frankly, Miami and Colorado are very questionable teams, representing very young programs this season. In Miami’s first conference contest of the season, Ward walked off the field after 343 yards and four touchdowns in the victory, but did toss two interceptions and lost a fumble.

However, his team’s collection elevation this season is undeniable, and his contributions unquestionable.

A LITERAL DARK HORSE

Technically, a Boise State Bronco.

Jacksonville-born Ashton Jeanty has quietly taken the college football world by storm. As a junior at Boise State, Jeanty has lead the Broncos to a respectable 3-1 record with one of the most amazing single-season performances we’ve ever seen. 800+ yards rushing on the season, including a 267 yard, six touchdown day at the expense of Georgia Southern. There’s no world where Boise State steals the spotlight from Coach Prime’s Colorado or Cam Ward’s Miami at this point of the college football season. But, Ashton Jeanty could steal the spotlight, and the Heisman Trophy in December, if he doesn’t slow down.

Watch this space.
