Return to player, or RTP, is the single most useful number a slot player can check before spinning. It tells you the theoretical percentage of all wagered money a game pays back to players over millions of spins. A slot with 96% RTP returns £96 for every £100 staked on average, while one at 94% returns just £94. Over a long session, that two-point gap makes a genuine difference to your bankroll. For UK players, where slots are regulated by the Gambling Commission and stakes are capped at £2 per spin on most online games, choosing high RTP titles is one of the smartest ways to stretch your playtime. Most modern video slots sit between 94% and 96.5%. Anything at 96% or above is considered strong, and a handful of titles push past 97%. That said, RTP is a long-term average, not a guarantee for any single session. Volatility matters too, so a high RTP game with extreme variance can still empty a balance quickly.
Which Slots Offer the Best Return to Player?
A few developers consistently lead the field on RTP. NetEnt, Play’n GO and Nolimit City are known for publishing transparent figures, and their flagship titles often exceed 96%. The table below highlights some of the strongest performers available at UK-licensed casinos.
| Game | Provider | RTP | Volatility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood Suckers | NetEnt | 98.00% | Low |
| Mega Joker | NetEnt | 99.00%* | Medium |
| Jackpot 6000 | NetEnt | 98.90%* | Medium |
| Ugga Bugga | Playtech | 99.07% | Low |
| Book of 99 | Relax Gaming | 99.00% | High |
| 1429 Uncharted Seas | Thunderkick | 98.60% | Low |
Note that games marked with an asterisk only reach their headline RTP when the optimal strategy or maximum bet feature is used. Blood Suckers, at a flat 98%, remains one of the most reliably high-return slots for UK players who prefer steady, low-volatility play.
If you want something more modern, Book of 99 from Relax Gaming pairs a 99% RTP with high volatility and a bonus buy option. It is a rare combination, since most high-volatility slots drop to around 96% or lower.
How to Use RTP When Choosing Slots
RTP should sit alongside volatility and bonus terms in your decision-making. A 98% RTP game with low volatility suits players who want longer sessions and frequent smaller wins. A 96.5% slot with high volatility suits those chasing bigger payouts who accept longer dry spells.
Always check the paytable or help screen inside the game itself. Some providers run multiple versions of the same slot with different RTP settings, and UK casinos are not always required to display the figure prominently. If a site publishes RTP openly, that transparency is a good sign of quality. Providers such as NetEnt routinely publish certified figures, which makes comparison straightforward.
- Prioritise slots at 96% RTP or above for regular play.
- Match volatility to your budget and session length.
- Check the in-game help screen, not just the marketing page.
- Remember that free spins and bonuses carry wagering requirements, which affect real value.
- Treat RTP as a guide over thousands of spins, never as a session prediction.
High RTP slots will not turn a losing session into a winning one, but they reduce the house edge you face over time. Combined with sensible staking and a clear budget, they give UK players the best possible foundation for enjoyable, informed play.
