Markelle Fultz returned to the Orlando Magic lineup against the Indiana Pacers in his first game back since suffering aknee injury on January 6, 2021. On the other side, Indiana was without starting point guard Malcolm Brogdon and bench leader Lance Stephenson. The Magic were trying to win consecutive games, which they accomplished with a 119-103 victory.
The Pacers took an early lead in the game. At halftime, Orlando trimmed the lead to one point. However, the Magic were able to extend their lead and seize control of the game in the third quarter. This was largely due to Fultz’s contribution off the bench. Due to his lengthy layoff, Fultz was limited to only 16 minutes as he appeared to be regaining his rhythm. Fultz was a tremendous spark, scoring 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and dishing out six assists.
Indiana demanded their revenge just two days later, defeating the Magic in overtime. This time, Orlando jumped off to an early lead, leading by as many as 13 points in the first half. Indiana was not about to surrender easily, as they managed to narrow the lead to four points at halftime. Once again, the Magic started hot in the third quarter but cooled off in the fourth. Indiana scored 34 points to the Magic’s 19 in the last minute of regulation to tie the game. Overtime belonged to Indiana, as the Magic managed only four points during the period. 122-114 was the final score.
Orlando’s next two games were against the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzles on the road. The game versus the Raptors was close, as Orlando led for the majority of the contest. The Raptors continued their runs, but the Magic responded with their own. In the end, Orlando defeated the Raptors 103-97.
The week’s last game was a blowout by the Memphis Grizzles. Memphis led from the outset through the conclusion of regulation. The lead had increased to 23 points by halftime. Orlando struggled from behind the arc and at the free throw line, shooting 11 of 35 (31%) and 11 of 16 (68%) respectively. Ja Morant led the Grizzles with 25 points and seven assists. Desmond Bane chipped in with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting.
Orlando’s record now stands at 16-49, good for last place in the Eastern Conference. On Tuesday, March 8th at 7 p.m. eastern, the Magic will return home to face the defending western conference champion Phoenix Suns.
