At the Sports Club Florida Media Day, the players and coaches of Dr. Phillips High School’s sports club gathered to introduce themselves and discuss their ambitions for the upcoming fall season. After enduring a challenging 4-6 season and facing some changes within their coaching staff, the Panthers are determined to approach the new season with a renewed sense of determination and resilience. Coach Wells, a seasoned mentor and state championship coach, acknowledges the impact of tough losses on both players and staff, but he exudes excitement about the potential of this group of talented individuals.
The players of the Dr. Phillips High School Panthers share their coach’s enthusiasm and eagerly anticipate the start of the new season. Maliki Wright, an aspiring player, expresses his eagerness to face formidable teams like the West Orange Warriors and Olympia Titans, both of which the Panthers suffered defeats against in the previous season. This fierce determination is evident throughout the team, exemplified by 2024 linebacker Jerad Smith, who confidently states, “I’m a cover for sure, but I’ma lay that wood.” Despite being currently unrecruited, Smith dreams of attending prestigious SEC schools like FSU or Clemson, while also considering the option of attending an HBCU.
Defensive end Johnny Fudge III shares Smith’s undeterred mindset. He dismisses the number of offers other athletes may have, firmly believing that once they step on the field, everyone is on equal ground. Fudge emphasizes his commitment to proving himself as an unrecruited athlete and highlights his desire to obtain a college degree. His determination is emblematic of the team’s collective ambition to succeed not only on the field but also academically.
